dj lessons learned from being a groom

After nearly 27 years and over 500 weddings, a few weejs agi I got to experience a wedding reception from a new perspective.  Not as an Emcee and DJ, but as the groom.

I have always told clients that the most important job of a mobile emcee/DJ is to coordinate the flow of events during the reception.  It's something I've worked hard to continually improve upon personally, and it's one of the key elements I've preached to the DJ partners I've trained over the years. But I really didn't realize just how important it was until I was a groom.  A groom-or to an even greater extend a bride-has a million things on their mind on their wedding day.  They are BUSY...having fun, visiting with friends and family members, sharing stories and hugs with the most important people in their lives (including each other).  The LAST thing on their mind is "is it time for the first dance", "when do we have the toasts", or other scheduling details.  THAT's the value of an emcee.

My wife Amy and I were blessed to have my partner Michael Dodson as our emcee and DJ.  And Michael did an excellent job making the evening flow just as we had hoped.  We sat down with Michael and came up with a plan, and Michael executed it to a "t".  It meant a worry-free evening for Amy and I, and a party to remember for our guests.

So if you are planning a wedding, please remember that your mobile DJ should not just be able to play loud music...he or she should be a skilled emcee-Master of Ceremonies.  I'm glad we had Michael to fill that role and I hope all of you have the same experience that we had!
